Dr. Lee Everett Monroe has devoted his life to supporting the role of higher education, especially for the African-American community.

Born in North Carolina to a disadvantaged single mother, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe received a scholarship to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, the oldest historically Black college in the South, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Solidifying his interest and skills in education, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe pursued graduate study at the University of Cincinnati, and received a Master’s degree in Guidance Counseling and Industrial Psychology. After working for some time as a teacher and educational administrator, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe returned to school, obtaining an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Since obtaining his doctorate, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe has carved a career path marked by successes in roles of increasing responsibility and visibility in the educational field. Often a pioneer as well as a leader, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe served as the Senior Education Advisor to North Carolina Governor Jim Martin. The first African American person to hold the position at the state and national level, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe remained in this crucial role for five years and gained high-level expertise in a variety of policy-related arenas. Dr. Monroe coordinated a number of state educational developments, oversaw the activities of other government advisors, directly advised the Governor on education matters, and served as Chairman of the Governor’s Council of Minority Executives.

Dr. Lee Everett Monroe went on to serve in executive administrative positions at several colleges, developing a singular reputation as a positive force for financial and academic renovation. In one of his most notable achievements, as President of Paul Quinn College in Texas, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe saved the school from closure and loss of accreditation.

Having accomplished dramatic success at Paul Quinn College, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe moved on from the school, accepting the role of President of Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina.

Now residing in North Carolina, Dr. Lee Everett Monroe enjoys painting, reading, and maintaining a healthy workout routine.
